MD/MS training: qualification, duration and responsibilities

MD/MS training: qualification, duration and responsibilities
Course factWhat it means for your choice
QualificationsMD means Doctor of Medicine; MS means Master of Surgery. The specialty attached to the award identifies the training programme.
Training durationThe standard post-MBBS broad-specialty degree route is three years. Recognised same-subject postgraduate diploma holders can have a two-year route where the applicable regulations and admission route permit it.
Academic workDepartmental clinical work, supervised procedures where relevant, seminars, research and assessment form part of residency. Compare the actual specialty curriculum, not only the institution name.
Training and attendanceNMC’s PGMER-2023 FAQ sets out attendance and leave treatment, including circumstances that extend training. A nominal course duration is not a promise of completion regardless of attendance.
Funding and commitmentsTuition, stipend and service/discontinuation bonds are separate facts. Stipend is not a standard national salary figure and should be sourced for the institution, year and resident level.

Read the PGMER-2023 regulations (duration table) and NMC’s PGMER-2023 FAQ for training and attendance conditions. For a college-specific example, read the separate DY Patil Pune MD/MS guide; its specialty fees must not be applied to other colleges.

01 / ENTRANCE ROUTES

Start with the right examination.

NEET-PG route

Check NBEMS examination instructions, then identify the counselling authority for each seat.

Visit NBEMS ↗

MD/MS admission planning starts with the examination accepted for your intended institution. NEET-PG and INI-CET are distinct routes; an examination application and a counselling registration are also separate steps. Record the route beside each programme before building a preference list.

The MCC PG Counselling 2026 bulletin, Chapter 12 requires MBBS qualification, medical-council registration and internship evidence. It specifies 30 September 2026 as the internship-completion cutoff for this admission year, subject to a competent-authority revision. The NBEMS 2026 application portal gives the same cutoff. These are session-specific requirements, not dates for a future intake. Sources checked 13 October 2026.

AIIMS publishes INI-CET prospectuses and allocation notices. Institution-specific admission pages can add reporting forms and joining instructions: the AIIMS Mangalagiri PG admissions page, for example, lists July 2026 INI-CET materials. Use the documents for your own institution and session.

NBEMS published the NEET-PG 2026 result notice on 24 September 2026. It states that candidature remains provisional until eligibility is verified. Examination qualification is separate from a specialty closing rank or counselling allotment.

02 / YOUR APPLICATION

Check eligibility before making commitments.

Make an evidence checklist covering your MBBS qualification, registration certificate, internship completion, entrance result and any category or seat-status claim. For each item, record the authority’s requirement, the document you hold and any mismatch needing clarification.

  • Qualification: match the degree and institution details to the applicable recognition requirements.
  • Internship: compare your completion evidence with the session’s specified cutoff date.
  • Registration: check the required certificate, issuing authority and validity.
  • Seat category: verify the supporting evidence and prescribed format separately.

If you trained outside India, are already enrolled in postgraduate study or have an unusual registration situation, seek the specific published instruction or a written answer from the responsible authority. A general eligibility summary cannot settle every applicant’s case.

03 / COUNSELLING

Know who allocates your seat.

MCC’s description of its PG responsibilities includes 50% All India Quota seats, deemed-university seats and specified central-institution routes. State authorities administer seats within their notified jurisdiction. The current seat matrix and counselling scheme determine the exact options available to you.

Create one row for each college–specialty–seat-category combination. Add the authority, registration portal, required documents and notice you are following. Do not assume a college’s private or government label alone identifies the correct process.

The MCC PG portal carries notices from different admission cycles. Read the session and publication date inside each notice. A page header or search result labelled with the present year does not make every linked schedule current.

MCC 2026 reporting: Chapter 3 distinguishes Freeze (retain the seat and physically join) from Float (seek upgrading through online willingness and document verification in Rounds 1–2). Both require document upload; mandatory reporting follows Round 3 for its allottees and earlier Float candidates who do not upgrade. Read the complete round-specific conditions and amendments in the 2026 counselling bulletin before choosing an option.

04 / SPECIALTY FIT

Choose work you want to grow into.

Start your specialty discussion with the work that interests you: patient contact, procedures, diagnostic reasoning, laboratory work, teaching or research. Reflect on what you enjoyed during clinical postings and where you would value more exposure before deciding.

Write three lists: priorities you will protect, trade-offs you can accept and questions you still need answered. Location, family commitments, training environment and cost may influence these lists as much as the specialty name. Avoid treating a popular branch as automatically suitable for every doctor.

Speak with residents and faculty about a normal working week, supervision and the progression of responsibility. Ask what surprised them after joining. Their experiences can help you prepare better questions, but they are individual accounts rather than promises about your future career or earnings.

05 / TRAINING QUALITY

Compare the department behind the name.

A college’s reputation is only a starting point. Ask how the particular department organises rotations, clinical learning, teaching sessions and supervision. Request examples of what a resident does at different stages of training rather than relying on a hospital-size claim.

  • Clinical learning: ask about relevant case exposure, supervised responsibilities and access to procedures.
  • Academic support: discuss seminars, case reviews, thesis mentoring and research resources.
  • Working arrangements: ask about duty patterns, leave, accommodation and support when difficulties arise.
  • Evidence: compare published information with several resident perspectives and note unresolved questions.

Keep a short visit or call record with the date, person contacted and answers received. Where information conflicts, return to the department for clarification. Our college shortlist checklist helps structure this comparison.

06 / FEES & STIPEND

Build a budget you can explain.

There is no single meaningful MD/MS fee figure across all institutions, specialties and seat categories. Obtain the current written fee schedule for the exact option. Separate confirmed charges from estimates and record when each payment falls due.

  • Academic payments: tuition, university charges, examination payments and compulsory academic expenses.
  • Living expenses: accommodation, meals, transport, travel and a personal contingency allowance.
  • Upfront amounts: deposits and initial payments needed before any stipend is received.
  • Stipend: confirm the written amount, deductions, payment arrangements and applicable conditions.

Compare total outgoings and expected receipts separately. This makes the timing of a cash shortfall visible. Ask whether quoted fees cover one year or the complete programme, and which amounts can change. Use our fee comparison guide to organise the evidence before committing.

07 / OBLIGATIONS

Read the conditions before accepting.

Ask for the documents governing service obligations, course discontinuation, resignation and refunds. Record any amount, duration, trigger and exception exactly as stated in the applicable terms. These conditions can differ between options and can materially affect your decision.

Keep college obligations separate from counselling rules. A statement about leaving a counselling round may not answer what happens after joining a programme. For unclear terms, obtain clarification from the issuing authority before accepting; do not build your plan around an informal assurance that a condition will be waived.

08 / PREFERENCE ORDER

Turn your research into a workable list.

Compare historical closing ranks only for matching specialties, institutions, categories, quotas, rounds and sessions. Past allotments help frame possibilities; they do not guarantee a seat. Decide whether you would actually accept each option at its documented cost and conditions.

  1. Shortlist: keep the programmes you can justify academically and practically.
  2. Order: write your true preferences and the reason for each trade-off.
  3. Verify: check the current matrix, programme name and seat category before submission.
  4. Save: retain submitted choices, acknowledgements and payment references.
  5. Respond: follow the instructions applicable to your allotment and round.

Read joining, upgrade and resignation instructions before taking action. Keep control of your login and final choices. If an outcome changes your plan, reassess the available options using the current rules rather than assuming a previous round’s conditions still apply.

09 / REPORTING FILE

Prepare evidence, not just a folder.

Use the counselling authority’s and institution’s actual checklist. Organise your degree or provisional qualification, marksheets, internship record, registration evidence, entrance documents, identity records and allotment letter as applicable. Add category or other status evidence only in the required format.

Check spelling, dates and consistency across records. Identify which documents must be original, uploaded or copied, and where additional forms are required. Keep a tracker showing what is ready, what is missing and who must issue it. Our admission documents guide provides a preparation method; the official list remains your final reference.

10 / CAMPUS MANTRA

Make your counselling conversation specific.

Bring your entrance result, academic and registration details, preferred specialties, locations and financial questions. Campus Mantra’s Pune and Delhi offices can help organise your shortlist and the questions you need to resolve. Sudip Dey is the Founder & Lead Counsellor.

Discuss the scope of support and applicable charges before proceeding. Admission eligibility and allotment are determined by the relevant authorities and institutions. Contact the team to discuss your next step, or meet the people behind Campus Mantra.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you submit your choices.

Does one application cover NEET-PG and INI-CET?

No. They are separate examination routes. Identify the examination, counselling registration and institute requirements for each option and session.

Should I choose only by last year’s closing rank?

No. Compare matching seat categories and rounds, then assess specialty fit, training, cost and obligations. Previous results do not guarantee a future allotment.

Are fees and stipend the same everywhere?

Use the written terms for your exact institution and programme. Compare payment timing as well as totals; do not assume a stipend will cover every expense.

Can Campus Mantra guarantee an MD/MS seat?

No. Guidance helps you organise research and choices. Eligibility decisions and allotments remain with the responsible authorities and institutions.
